Our new data from the weekend USA Today/Gallup poll show that Illinois Senator Barack Obama – who announced the formation of his presidential exploratory committee on Tuesday – is in second place among Democrats, behind only front-runner Hillary Clinton. Trailing behind these two are John Edwards, Al Gore, John Kerry, Joe Biden, Bill Richardson, and Wesley Clark. Clark has the distinction of garnering 2% of Democrats ’ votes – exactly the same percentage as Clinton received in February 1991. Even Christopher Dodd, who gets 1%, shouldn ’ t necessarily feel discouraged. History indicates that he certainly could in theory come from behind and gain his party ’ s nomination.

Colts beat the Patriots !!!! Peyton Manning finally gets his shot at the big game! The sweetness of the victory is that it came at the hands of the Patriots, Tom Brady throwing an interception sealed the deal, and the score was the EXACT mirror of the AFC Championship game the Colts lost in New England a few years ago, 38-34. THE EXACT SAME SCORE!!! That part is what blew my mind. The difference, though, was that the Colts set an NFL record by coming back from an 18pt deficit! YEAH BABY !!!! Take THAT Patsies!!!

I watched “ The Dresden Files ” on the Sci Fi station last night and was pretty pleased with the first episode. I started reading Jim Butcher ’ s series about a year ago and loved his books. Poor Harry Dresden is not your typical hero … broke, put upon, never getting a break. In other words, a pretty typical guy who seems to attract a lot of bad luck. Part of the problem is the fact he ’ s a wizard and wizards are apparently a magnet for all sorts of unsavory creatures that us … the every day schmuck, doesn ’ t know anything about.

As Microsoft prepares to release Windows Vista to the masses, disparate Linux camps are banding together to prepare a counterattack. The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) is merging with the Free Standards Group (FSG) to form The Linux Foundation. The goal of the new group is to streamline efforts and help the open-source operating system compete more effectively against proprietary platforms. Former FSG Executive Director Jim Zemlin will lead the new foundation.

With the departure of Ken Whisenhunt to Arizona many are now proclaiming Russ Grimm to be the heir apparent to Bill Cowher -- a trusted, respected assistant seemingly ready to assume the mantel of head coach. But such assumptions ignore the deliberative quality of the interviewing process (according to a statement by Art Rooney II the organization is trying "to determine which one is the best candidate for the Pittsburgh Steelers at this point in time." If Russ Grimm was the obvious choice then why the second round of interviews?), and the prediction here is that by the end of January Mike Tomlin is going to be the new head coach, and first African-american head coach, of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Since I wasn ’ t snowed in this weekend, I went and saw Flags of Our Fathers at the dollar movie with Adam and Kelly on Sunday. This is one-half of the Iwo Jima story created by Clint Eastwood, the other half being Letters from Iwo Jima (told from the Japanese side). I have a sort of special connection to seeing this story played out on the screen: my great uncle was a marine and was in this battle.

on Friday. Mother of GOD. I sort of felt indifferently toward this movie, other than that I have a mild enjoyment of the Broadway cast recording, but now, well... okay, this movie was so beyond amazing I can not even describe it. Jennifer Hudson deserves an Oscar -- for LEADING actress, mind you -- if you ask me. Which, strangely, the Oscar voters never do. Still, I cried throughout the entire movie (for all good reasons) and ran out and bought the extended soundtrack the next day. It was amazingly, amazingly good. Jamie Foxx is great, Danny Glover is great, and even though I really hate Eddie Murphy, he was pretty good, but really, Jennifer Hudson steals the show. Now if only

I don ’ t have a story on this, but the ESPN ticker is reporting that Bill Parcells is retiring. This doesn ’ t come as much of a surprise to me, except that every year he ’ s suppoed to retire and never does. Jerry Jones will be really upset about this, and T.O. will be really happy about this, until the next coach comes in and he hates him, as well. I guess the Tony Romo thing was just too much, and Bill decided to hang it up. Maybe Aaron Rodgers should try bobbling the snap of a potential game-tying field goal that could get your team to advance to the next round of the playoffs. Maybe that ’ s the medicine Favre needs.

About 20% of commenters say that the Australian flag should not be waved at an event like the Big Day Out, mostly because they fear or don ’ t like overt nationalism, and/or because they are reminded of the Cronulla Riot when they see people wearing the Australian flag as a cape, or using it to demand patriotism from their fellow Australians, or (hilariously) tourists.

On May 22nd, I shot Public Service Announcements for MIFA, another cherished community charity. Instead of being "the annnouncer" (my usual role in Psas), I was interviewed by the good people who created these: 30 spots. In the finished product, they used some of my comments about the Metropolitan Inter-faith Association's agility to discern emerging needs and address them. It's a great organization born from the bitter burden Memphis has shouldered since 1968: the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Along with the National Civil Rights Museum, MIFA is some great and tangibile fruit that has risen from the labors of so many.

Another problem this movie has is that it is being called “ A fairy tale for adults ” which is misleading. The time we heard of a fairy tale for adults it was Shrek and what they meant by that phrase was that there were some Austin Powers references mixed in with all the fart jokes. Pan ’ s Labyrinth is about the Spanish Civil War and there is a lot of war and torture scenes mixed in with a darker version of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. Make no mistake, this movie is brutally violent. Also, if you are squeamish about accurate depictions of pre-modern medicine child birth, you might want to close your eyes a couple times.

"The touchdowns were horrific, three of them being scored by almost 900 pounds of human girth. Patriots guard Logan Mankins recovered Laurence Maroney's fumble in the end zone. Colts defensive tackle Dan Klecko lined up on offense, as he is wo nt to do, and barreled into the flat and made a nice catch and pivot into the end zone for a 1-yard score. Colts center Jeff Saturday found Dominic Rhodes'fumble in the end zone for a score. Losing American Idol hasn ’ t hurt Chris Daughtry any. This weekend he sang the National Anthem at the NFC Championship Game in Chicago. His self-titled debut album reached # 2 on the Billboard Top 200 in December and is still at # 4 in its 8th week, right behind Justin Timberlake! As if that wasn ’ t enough, Daughtry ’ s It ’ s Not Over is VH1 ’ s # 1 video this week on the V Spot!

With all the injuries, lots of fans want the team to tank games (or at least lose as many as possible) so they'll be in a position to get Greg Oden or Kevin Durant. But after talking to the team, seeing them in the locker room and hearing each and every player say how much they want to win, it's impossible for me to root for that to happen.

I haven't seen much detail on the president's health care proposal. It looks like a new way of dumping more money into the individual health insurance market. In other words, by undermining risk pooling, it contributes to the "death spiral" whereby good risks -- people with low expected health care costs -- separate from bad risks. Some people would say, that is risk pooling you fool. No. But that's not my focus here.

This week, I'll be able to pick out of the selection of opening movies. The only two movies that seem worth my time would be Blood and Chocolate and Smokin'Aces. The only problem I foresee with Blood and Chocolate is it seems too close to Underworld to merit dropping $10 for it. Therefore, I would go see Smokin'Aces. Smokin'Aces stars Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman, and Ryan Reynolds. Buddy "Aces" Israel, a Las Vegas performer, has ticked off a lot of people in his move to testify against the mob. Just before he is placed under witness protection, he decides to have one last run at the tables, when the mobs moves in. Hilarity ensues. And by hilarity I mean assassins bent on murdering Buddy Israel.

There are a lot of questions that will be asked and answered over the next few months as The Pats create the 2007 version of their team. Players will come and I am sure some favorite players will go. Has Troy Brown played his last game as a Patriot? How about Tedy Bruschi? How about Corey Dillon and Rodney Harrison?
