According to the AP, Sacramento area Republican Congressman John Doolittle has given up his seat, "temporarily," on the powerful House Appropriations Committee in the wake of revelations that his Washington area home was raided last Friday by the FBI as part of an ongoing investigation into congressional influence peddling. Doolitle narrowly won re-election last year against retired Colonel Charles Brown. Doolittle's office had explained the FBI raid as pertaining to his wife having worked for convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Doolittle, a former state legislator, is one of the most conservative members of Congress from California. He did a number of favors for Abramoff clients in the Northern Marianas Islands and elsewhere.

How many people saw the original NBC Nightly News broadcast last night? Call me crazy: I thought they weren't sensational. There was no KILLER SPEAKS sort of stuff. Brian Williams put it all in context, showed a color copy of the envelope NBC received, said they understood they were giving a murderer a platform, brought on Pete Williams, they showed some of the video -- and to my knowledge they've still showed only portions of it -- and at no time did it seem like tabloid TV to me. I thought it was very professional. But I have no doubt that a lot of the media have gone berserk over this and that saddens me.

My good friend Ilhan Tuzcu, a professor at the University of Alabama, spoke to local media about Dr. Liviu Librescu, who was Ilhan's advisor. Librescu, a Holocaust survivor, was one of the 32 people who lost their lives as a result of the Virginia Tech slayings at Norris Hall. Ilhan also knew Kevin Granata, 45, a biochemical engineering specialist who was also killed. Tuzcu, who is originally from the city of Mus in eastern Turkey, studied and worked at Virginia Tech for seven years. He moved to Tuscaloosa in 2004.

As I wrote the other day, I believe there is some resentment in the Nashville community toward new artist who become famous on television shows like American Idol. Going back to the beginning of the Nashville country music scene there has been a certain “ pecking order ” to the way things are done and a timetable new stars are suppose to follow when joining the group of stars which make up country music. Underwood did not follow that pecking order in the same way that Hill did and most likely Faith Hill believes, down deep inside, that Carrie Underwood has not paid her dues, yet.

When I checked to see who had directed "Vacancy," a motel-based horror movie starring Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale, I was surprised to find the name Nimrod Antal. After the usual brain lock, I remembered that Antal had directed "Kontroll," a movie that traveled the festival circuit in 2003. Why was I surprised? "Vacancy" which opens Friday, isn't exactly an art-house follow-up to Antal's well-received debut.

Matthew Fox, star of the TV sensation Lost, is reportedly in “ final negotiations ” to join the cast of Warners ’ Speed Racer movie. Fox will play the title character ’ s mysterious rival Racer X in the pic, which will be directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski. Also cast in the Joel Silver production is Aussie thesp Kirk Gurry, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He will play Speed ’ s mechanic Sparky. The pair join a cast that includes Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon and John Goodman. Filming begins this summer in Berlin, which coincides with Fox ’ s hiatus from shooting Lost. Amidst the mostly, witty humor of this romantic comedy were serious undertones and developments I did not expect to occur in the story.

I'm not defending his actions. While certainly impressive to the extent of his madness, what he did was unspeakably fucking wrong. The fucking gooky motherfucker put at least three bullets in every person he attacked. But the fact remains; there was no other way for him and he was still a kid. He could have been saved. The Bulls and Nets was a close game until the last three minutes when the Nets went on a mini-run to lock it up. Jason Kidd had a horrible night offensively in which he only made one field goal and two free throws. He made up for that with 11 assists and 11 rebounds. The players of the game for the Nets were Vince Carter, who almost recorded a triple double, Mikki Moore who dropped in 22 points before getting into foul trouble, and Josh Boone, who gave the Nets a giant lift with 15 points off the bench.
